Encoder Products :: Selection Guide

Introduction

Welcome to the EPC Encoder Selection Guide. The process of selecting an encoder for your motion system is not as simple and straightforward as it might seem at first glance since there are a large number of variables that must be considered, most of which are dependent upon factors outside of the encoder itself. Some examples:

  • Since encoders are most often used as feedback devices, what information does your system need?
  • At what point or points in the overall process is feedback appropriate?
  • What are the environmental conditions that the encoder will be subjected to?

As a result of these types of considerations, the purpose of this guide is not to provide the answer, but rather to provide you guidance in choosing which one of EPC's wide range of solutions will best meet your requirements. Let's get started!!

Selection Criteria

Your motion system will usually dictate what set of selection criteria are most important to you. These criteria usually fall into one of the following broad categories. Select the one that is most important to you:
